Class Descriptions

First Time Coaches:	This class will cover the format of the program, role of the coach, getting started with teams, ground rules, outside assistance.
Returning Coaches:	Forum discussion of issues including maintaining program ethics, outside assistance, team composition and selection, parent participation, and "this happened last year…what would you do?"
Hands-On Spontaneous:	Practicing, scoring, strategies, and techniques for hands-on spontaneous problems.
Verbal and Combination Spontaneous:	Practicing, scoring, strategies, and techniques for verbal and combination spontaneous problems.
Style:	Defining, possibilities, elaboration, integration, how and when to develop, completing the form.
Tournament Procedures:	Details about tournament day, atmosphere, schedule, location, traffic flow outside and inside. What improvements would you like to see, and who will help do them?
Problems 1-6:	Each session of each problem will cover the same material; objectives, rules and scoring criterion for the Long-term problem, the problem clarification procedure, outside assistance, and tournament procedures specific to each problem.
Rules and Paperwork:	Team rosters; tournament registration; cost, outside assistance, and style forms; complaints and tribunal procedures; normalization of scores; and site-specific rules.
Team Building:	Activities, steps to…, styles of…, experiences, and insights.
Time Management:	Managing a timeline, organization, planning and prioritization.
Working with Balsa:	Tools, properties of balsa, grading and choosing, cutting, gluing and testing.
Coordinators Forum:	Organization, funding, space and time commitments, contracts, grade levels and inclusion of all students.
Thinking Skills:	The creative problem solving process, brainstorming, SCAMPER, and other tools.
Understanding Scoring:	How the raw score reflects the scoring requirements from the problem descriptions, how it is reported on the score sheet, and how to explain it to team members.
Resources:	Local resources for materials, books, websites etc.
